Swim Lessons

Adelle went to her first swim lesson last Friday and loved it. It's been two years since Adelle was first analyzed for speech therapy and what an emotional journey it's been since then. We tried dance lessons more than a year ago and it ended in tears for me as the teacher told us that Adelle lacked the attention span. since then we've learned that Adelle is on the high end of the Autism spectrum.
I have always been sensitive to how Adelle was treated as I'm sure all moms are but it's nerve racking wondering if people are going to understand, judge her, judge me, or even be willing to work with her.

That meeting with the dance teacher has made me appreciate the teachers that Adelle has. This is her second year in preschool and the progress that she has made is amazing. Her teachers have said that Adelle's vocabulary is extensive for a 4 year old, which blows my mind considering that at 2 she wouldn't talk at all.  She loves art and is starting to enjoy music time at school where a year ago she would need a special chair and head phones to endure it. She looks forward to participating with other kids and her classmates enjoy her. She has a great sense of humor and is emotionally vested in everything and everyone she meets.

If I have learned anything in the past two years it's to record every small goal met. It's great to be able to look back and see the progress made. If you are wondering about your own child's progress get in contact with the Early Development Network in your state or call the administer at your elementary school and get information. I can not imagine what it would be like without their support!
